SIMULATION OF FLOW AND EVALUATION OF BRIDGE SCOUR AT HORSE ISLAND CHUTE BRIDGE NEAR CHESTER, ILLINOIS WRIR 01-4176
DESCRIPTION OF STUDY AREA
The study reach and surrounding area begins near river mile 108 and ends near river mile 111 on the Mississippi River, near Chester, Illinois. The total width of the Mississippi River floodplain throughout this reach is roughly 5 miles. Horse Island dissects an old river channel which empties into the Mississippi River toward the upper end of the reach. The southern most fork of the old dissected river channel is known as Horse Island Chute which is crossed by MoDOT overflow structure L-1004R1 on Missouri State Highway 51.
OBJECTIVE
The objective of this study was to quantify hydraulic parameters and subsequent scour through the overflow structure crossing Horse Island Chute. Due to the confluence of Horse Island Chute with the Mississippi River, it was necessary to acknowledge a two-dimensional, Finite Element Surface-Water Modeling System (FESWMS) numerical model to determine hydraulic parameters needed for an evaluation of potential pier, contraction, and abutment scour.
RESULTS
Scour computations were developed by the U.S. Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration presented in Hydraulic Circular 18. Three simulations were analyzed in this study. A measured simulation was considered for calibration of observed conditions (944,000 CFS), a maximum discharge simulation was considered for the record peak discharge (1,000,000 CFS), and an impendent discharge was considered for the case of impending road overflow (894,000 CFS) at Horse Island Chute Bridge.
