Description of Gaging Station on -- Wilson Creek near Battlefield, MO 07052160
LOCATION.--Lat. 37o07'02”, long 93o24'14”, in SW 1/4NW 1/4 sec. 24, T.28 N., R.23 W., Greene County, Hydrologic Unit 11010002 on left bank 50 ft. downstream from bridge on Greene County Road 182, 1.8 mile west of Battlefield, 0.3 mile upstream from McElhaney Branch.
Gage may be reached from the jct. of Highways 60 and 65 west 8.0 miles to State Route FF, turn south 0.9 miles to State Route M, west 3.0 miles to State Route ZZ, south 1.5 miles to Farm Road 182, then east 1.0 mile to the bridge/gage.
ESTABLISHMENT.--Re-established as a USGS gaging station July 22, 1999.
DRAINAGE AREA.--58.3 mi2.
GAGE.--Design Analysis pressure sensor and ESC-80 data logger in a 20”x30”x54” metal shelter. Orifice elevation 1.60 ft. gage height.
Type-A wire-weight gage on downstream handrail of bridge. Check-bar elevation is 8.63 ft. gage datum. Check bar set to read at water surface = 28.58.
HISTORY.--March 14, 1968 to Oct. 14, 1970, water stage recorder at bridge.
Sept. 20, 1972 to Sept. 16, 1982, digital and graphic recorders driven by bubble gage housed in concrete block building on left bank 300 ft. downstream from bridge . Water quality monitor also housed in block building.
July 22, 1999 to present as described under “GAGE” above.
REFERENCE AND BENCH MARKS.--R.M. 1 and 2 destroyed.
T.B.M. 1 is a 20 penny nail streamward side of 3 ft. Sycamore tree, at left edge of water just below pump. Elevation 5.85 ft. gage datum. Not recovered 7-23-99.
T.B.M. 2 is a 20 penny nail southwest side of 3 ft. Sycamore tree and 30 ft. upstream from pump, approximately 300 ft. downstream from bridge. Elevation 6.95 ft. gage datum.
B.M. 3 is bronze tablet stamped Greene County Bridge #2643 on top of left downstream concrete handrail of bridge. Gage height 31.93 ft.
R.P. 1 is a chiseled arrow on top of downstream handrail of bridge. Gage height 30.19 ft.
R.M. 4 is a chiseled square on top of left upstream concrete handrail of bridge.
CHANNEL AND CONTROL.--Low-water control is a gravel riffle in a rock bottom channel. Channel is control for medium and high stages. The channel is straight near the bridge. Left bank is low with trees and will overflow at about 6 ft. gage height.
DISCHARGE MEASUREMENTS.--Low-flow measurements are made by wading in the vicinity of gage. Medium and high measurements are made from the downstream side of the bridge which is marked at 5 ft. intervals from the left abutment. The bridge is angular to the stream.
FLOODS.--For period of record from 1972 to 1982, flood of May 20, 1979 had a maximum discharge of 7,240 cfs, gage height 14.03 ft.
POINT OF ZERO FLOW.--1.3 ft (July 23, 1999).
WINTER FLOW.--No ice effect due to sewage effluent upstream.
REGULATION AND DIVERSION.--Sewage effluent from Southwest Treatment Plant.
ACCURACY.--Fair.
COOPERATION.--Missouri Department of Natural Resources.
