Description of Gaging Station on -- Wilson Creek near Springfield, MO 07052100

LOCATION.--Lat. 37 10 06, long 93 22 14, in NW 1/4 NE 1/4 sec. 6, T.28 N., R.22 W., Greene County, on center bridge pier of county road 156, 1 mile upstream from Sewage Treatment Plant and South Creek.

Gage may be reached from junctions of Route FF and Sunshine Street by going south on FF to County Road 156, then west on 156 0.25 mile to gage.

Datum of gage is 1149.65 ft. above sea level.

ESTABLISHMENT.--Established as a U.S. Geological Survey gaging station Sept. 21, 1972. Discontinued September 20, 1982. Re-established May 27, 1998.

DRAINAGE AREA.-- 35.3 mi2.

GAGE.--Sutron 8200 DCP with a Handar 436B encoder in a coffin shelter on 18 inch pipe on downstream side of bridge pier. Encoder is set to read the same as inside tape gage which is an integral part of the DCP. DCP ID 1636492E.

Reference gage is a Type-A wire-weight gage. Check bar elevation 17.43 ft. gage height.

HISTORY.--Sept. 21, 1972 to Sept. 20, 1982, Stevens A-35 and digital recorders driven by bubble gage in concrete block building. A water quality monitor was also operated at site, independent of stage recorders.

May 27, 1998 to present as described in "GAGE" above.

REFERENCE AND BENCH MARKS.--B.M. 1 and 2 destroyed.

B.M. 3 bronze disk in top of right upstream concrete handrail. Elevation 1167.95, 18.30 ft. gage height (furnished by City of Springfield).

R.M. 4 is a chiseled square in top of right downstream concrete handrail. Elevation 18.01 ft. above zero of gage.

R.P. 1 is penciled arrow on recorder shelf. Elevation 17.15 ft. above zero of gage.

R.P. 2 is painted arrow on bottom bevel on downstream handrail. Elevation 18.84 ft. above zero of gage.

R.M. 5 is a chiseled square in top of left downstream concrete handrail. Elevation 20.29 ft. above zero of gage.

Datum of gage is 1149.65 ft. above sea level.

CHANNEL AND CONTROL.--Low water control is a solid rock riffle 100 ft. below gage. Channel is control for medium and high stages. The channel is straight at the bridge. Left bank is high and brush covered and not subject to overflow. Right bank is low with scattered trees and will overflow at about 8.0 ft. stage.

DISCHARGE MEASUREMENTS.--Low water measurements are made by wading in vicinity of gage. Medium and high measurements are made form the downstream side of the bridge. The overflow may be measured by wading or by boat.

FLOODS.--For period of record, flood of May 20, 1978 reached a gage height of 9.48 ft. Discharge 3,480 cfs.

WINTER FLOW.--Will probably be affected by ice during extremely cold periods.

ACCURACY.--Stage-discharge relationship should be stable. Records should be good to fair.

COOPERATION.--City of Springfield.
