Brian P. Kelly
Hydrologist, Project Chief

Education
- January 1987 - August 1991 - University of Missouri - Columbia,
Department of Geology. MS received August 1991. Emphasis in
hydrogeology. Master's thesis topic: The role of macropores in
unsaturated zone chemical transport.
- August 1980 - December 1986 - University of Missouri - Columbia,
Department of Geology. BS received Deceber 1986.

Professional Societies:
- National Ground Water Association, Association of Ground Water
Scientists and Engineers

Professional Experience:
- October 1995 - Present: Project Chief, Ground-water monitoring in the
Missouri River Alluvium. The study monitors ground water levels in 25
wells and river stage at three sites in the Missouri River alluvium.
- October 1995 - September 1996: Project Chief, Transmissivity Estimates
of the Missouri River Alluvium. The study results estimated aquifer
transmissivity from the changes in water levels in wells near the Missouri
River in response to changes in river stage using an analytical technique.
- October 1994 - September 1996: Project Chief,Monitoring Well Network
Design for the City of Independence, Missouri. The study determined
possible locations for 75 monitoring wells in 35 well clusters around the
City of Independence, Missouri, well field. Contributing recharge areas,
and time of ground-water travel from each well in the network to the well
field were determined using ground-water flow and particle tracking
analysis combined with a geographic information system.
- May 1992 - September 1996: Project Chief, Missouri River Alluvial
Aquifer Ground Water Simulation The study determined the contributing
recharge areas for all known and operating public and industrial wells in
the Missouri River alluvial aquifer in the Kansas City metropolitan area
under several river stage, well pumping scenarios. The contributing
recharge areas were determined using ground-water flow and particle
tracking analysis combined with a geographic information system. Results
of the study form the basis of a comprehensive regional ground-water
protection plan developed by the Mid-America Regional Council.
- May 1991 - Present: Project Chief, Unsaturated zone preferential flow
and transport at the Missouri Management Systems Evaluation Area near
Centralia, Missouri. The study results characterized unsaturated zone
water flow and transport in a claypan soil using nitrogen isotopes and
bromide tracers applied to an agricultural study plot.
- December 1990 - May 1991: Ground water hydrologist, Burns and
McDonnell Engineers, Architects, and Consultants. Project
investigations included: monitoring well network assessment and design,
petroleum contamination in ground water beneath a refinery, TCE
contamination of ground water at several industrial sites, ground-water
modeling for contaminant remediation and construction dewatering,
ground-water sampling, geotechnical drilling, and soil sampling.
